Data and Calculation Methodology

Every formula the app uses, and where it comes from.

Energy

Resting energy expenditure is estimated with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, which uses a sex-based coefficient along with age, height and weight. That is multiplied by an activity factor and adjusted for your goal.

You can override the calculated targets in Settings. The app treats your override as the truth.

Protein and leucine

Daily protein is set in grams per kilogram of body weight according to your goal, then floored so that the per-meal target is always achievable across your chosen number of meals.

The per-meal targets follow Layman DK et al., "Impacts of protein quantity and distribution on body composition", Frontiers in Nutrition (2024) 11:1388986. The leucine target rises with age because muscle becomes less responsive.

These are practical targets, not biological cutoffs. The response to protein rises across a range rather than switching on at a line.

Why the percentages differ from the preset name

Protein is set first, in grams per kilogram. Fat comes from the preset. Carbohydrate fills the remaining energy. The resulting percentages are shown in Settings and can differ from the percentage the preset is named for — the grams are the target that matters.

Weight forecasts

Any projected date assumes consistent energy intake and activity, and uses 7,700 kcal per kilogram. Actual progress varies. Once enough weigh-ins exist, the forecast follows your own rolling trend rather than the original calculation.

Exercise energy

Estimated from MET values in the Compendium of Physical Activities and your body weight. A figure from a device always wins over an estimate.

Estimated exercise energy is NOT added back to your daily calorie target. MET estimates run generous, and the activity multiplier in your targets already accounts for habitual training.
